"Since the Supreme Court's affirmative action decision last summer, we're seeing a lot of clients grapple with how to maintain programs and practices honoring diversity and inclusion without finding themselves in the crosshairs of groups challenging these programs around the country," Lanning said. "As we saw with the UNC system this week, many are abandoning these efforts altogether."

Lanning added, "Our team is well-positioned to help clients navigate the rapidly changing legal issues in this space. If you structure things the right way, you can still do this work without meaningful legal exposure."

Previously, the practice group was known as the civil rights and racial equity assessments group but was renamed in March to reflect the breadth of its capabilities and counsel, McDowell said in the statement.

"We are proud to be one of the first law firms in the nation that is blazing a trail in this important work and Josh brings a wealth of relevant experience and perspective as the new team co-head," McDowell said.
